Self Distributing Your GLBT Film or Video

A Resource List Brought to You by PopcornQ

Film and videomakers often ask us for self-distribution tips and resources. This resource list is meant to serve as a starting point for those of you who are trying to get your work circulated to festivals and other markets. Look for regular updates as we continue to gather information.

Inclusion on this list does not constitute an endorsement by PopcornQ. This list is intended for informational purposes only. If you want to be included on this list or have any updates or corrections, please contact us at PopcornQ.

The Queer Film Festival Circuit

A good place to start is the PQ Fest List. This is an unmoderated list serv which reaches the programmers of more than 100 gay and lesbian film fests around the world. The list is meant to facilitate communication among festival programmers, and provide an easy way for film and videomakers to get info about their work out to programmers. You may want to post a press release about your film/video which includes basic info like running time, year, country, format, and all of your contact info (address, phone, fax, e-mail, website). Don't forget to include a description and throw in a mention of any awards you've won, or excerpts from favorable reviews.

You should also take a gander at PopcornQ's International Directory of Lesbian and Gay Film Festivals which has complete contact info, festival dates and website links for tons of queer film festivals.

Other Film Festivals

You may also want to submit to some "straight" festivals -- there are lots of specialized fests for shorts, documentaries, etc. You should also consider other identity based festivals that may be appropriate venues for the film (there are tons of Jewish, Asian, Latino, Black, Women's, Transgender, Children's, etc. film festivals around the world).

One of our favorite places for finding these festivals is on Yahoo.

The Film Festival Server is also a great resource, as is the Festival Products website.

Miscellaneous Other Resources

  • A lot of great info for indie filmmakers can be found at indieWIRE.

  • Check out the Association of Independent Video & Filmmakers and be sure to read Erin Blackwell's fantastic (though slightly out of date) AIVF article about gay and lesbian distributors, Bringing Queer Films To a Theather Near You for an introduction to possible companies to contact.

And don't forget The Film Arts Foundation -- the most amazing resource for independent filmmakers in the Bay Area.

  • Another good info site is Shortmovies.com

  • Three Fab Filmmaker Focused List Servs:

    Film Dykes
    Bay Area Film Dykes
