Stock Footage Houses

Archive Films
Just one of several for-profit stock footage libraries producers can purchase images from. Their library contains newsreels, silent and sound features, documentaries, and industrial films from the '40s and '50s. They even have early African-American works, broadcasts of European TV, The Los Angeles County Film Collection, and The March of Time newsreel series. With Quicktime you can download free moving clips of Elvis in the army, an atomic bomb test, and water filling a room among others.

National Film Board of Canada (NFB)
Along with pages on their film and video library, this beautiful, well-designed, and intricate site provides information on many aspects of the NFB. You can use the site in English or French and they divide their holdings into French and English collections. Searching for works is available via a variety of film-specific info: title, director, cast, crew, distribution agency, year of production, etc. Particularly wonderful for producers is their online Stockshot Library which contains selected outtakes of NFB-produced films dating form 1895 to the present. Anyone can access stills of the stock footage and, under their What's New feature one can check out the latest additions. Should you wish to purchase some images, that too can be done online. Isn't that convenient?

FOOTAGE.net
This site represents six different for-profit stock footage operations and provides a link to the website of each purveyor: VDOLive 2.0, Film Bank, Grinberg Film Libraries, CNN Image Source, Archive Films (see preceding link), and Fabulous Footage Inc.

The Prelinger Archives
Well, if you want to know how, why, and when Rick Prelinger became an archivist and "media archaeologist," Rick will tell you, in his own loquacious style on this, Rick's very own, self-promoting website. Personalization aside, Mr. Prelinger has set up a stock footage library of "ephemeral" films where producers can purchase that little gem of a camp, historic, and/or enigmatic shot. The entrepreneur Prelinger also allows you to buy his CD-ROMs online. These visual essays making social commentary are composed of American corporate, safety, educational, and newsreel film footage he has collected over the years.
