1. Start a gay-straight alliance.
2. Meet with teachers, counselors, and staff and tell them what it's like for
LGBT students.
3. Conduct a survey to assess your school's acceptance levels.
4. Write an editorial or an article for your school newspaper.
5. Send letters to the editor about your school to local papers.
6. Learn about LGBT history and challenge your teacher to include this
information in classes.
7. Bring LGBT history up in class, when relevant to topics (example:
the Holocaust).
8. Organize a Day of Silence project at your school (April).
9. Work with the school librarian to include an LGBT resource section.
10. Work with your school library to present a display for
LGBT History Month (October).
11. Offer an after-school LGBT history class.
12. Ask teachers to put "Safe Zone" stickers on their doors or in their
classrooms to show other students they're LGBT friendly or supportive.
13. Present a bulletin board or display for LGBT History Month (October).
14. Organize a youth panel to discuss LGBT issues for the school, parents,
or teachers.
15. Invite a local
GLSEN or
PFLAG chapter to speak
at your school.
16. Ensure that your school recognizes LGBT and same-sex couples at the
school's prom.
17. Support other local schools in starting gay-straight alliances by
conducting a "GSA Training" workshop.
18. Work with a local GLSEN chapter to present a teacher training on LGBT
issues.
19. Organize support for school non-discrimination and non-harassment
policies inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity.
