Greta Garbo
Before Bette Davis' eyes there were Greta Garbo's. Mysterious and
beautiful, the Stockholm native (1905-1990) always made people wonder.
"I shall die a bachelor," she said, in her gender-bending role as
Sweden's lesbian Queen Christina.
Garbo's sultry accent was part of her charm, and she made the transition
from silent films to sound better than most. "Garbo Talks!" exclaimed
the publicity for Anna Christie, her first talkie.
Like her contemporary Marlene Dietrich, Garbo had a penchant for
butchness. And like Dietrich, the secretive Garbo fell hard for lesbian
screenwriter Mercedes de Acosta back in 1931. She retired from acting at
the heartbreakingly early age of 36, spending the rest of her life
jet-setting around the world, quietly gardening, and just being Garbo.
