    About Susan Stryker

  • Pictured here is Fakir Musafar, a driving force behind the popularization of piercing and tattooing over the last few decades. He's gracing the front of the December 1981 issue of Growing Pains, the newsletter of the Society of Janus, one of the earliest social/support groups devoted to leather and S/M. It was founded as a mixed-gender group in 1974 by the late Cynthia Slater, and is still an important point of entry into the leather community for many isolated individuals. As this document suggests, the countercultural chic that piercing, tattooing, and other forms of body modification enjoy today has its roots in queer community.
