Will and Grace
took home three Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, out of its 11 nominations. Max Mutchnick, one of the
show's executive producers, joked as he held the statuette, "As a gay man I
can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I've finally met a girl I want to
sleep with." On a more serious note, he added "And I'd really like to
thank the Academy. This award gives a new meaning to the phrase 'acceptance
speech.'"
The cast made the presentation for Outstanding Individual Performance in
a Variety or Music Program, after joking about gay characters on prime time shows:
"One can only imagine what the TV landscape might have looked like if
there had always been gay characters on TV: I Dream of Johnny, The Lesbionic
Woman, Ozzy & Harry ... Maude ... The Courtship of Eddie's Father by his Bachelor
Friend Rick, The Little Bathhouse on the Prairie ... Frasier."
Not so coincidentally, they awarded the Emmy to an absent -- but very
queer -- Eddie Izzard for his show Dress to Kill.
