Kristen Johnston
Born: 20 September, 1967
Quote: "People on the street don't talk to me like I'm Pamela Anderson. They talk to me like I'm kinda scary."
As the sultry Sally Solomon on the hit NBC series Third Rock From the
Sun, Kristen Johnston has won two Emmy Awards (in 1997 and 1999) for
outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of
the rambunctious alien. "We say Sally is a man in a woman's body, but
that's not technically correct" Johnston told AP. "Actually, she is a very
masculine, asexual alien inside a woman's body."
At six feet tall, Johnston's also an outstanding actress who's proud to
be a role model for big-boned gals. "I really feel for these young women
going through these very difficult body changes," she told ET
Online. "I worry about them because I think they're being told by us, by
television, that the only way to be is a size two. That has nothing to
do with how beautiful you are."
Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Milwaukee, Johnston began acting
in school and community theater productions as a teen. After graduating
from New York University with a B.F.A. in drama, she made her professional
stage debut with playwright David Mamet's Atlantic Theater Company. Johnston
found non-stop theater work, sometimes performing in three different
plays in the same week.
Her stage work led to the role of Sally on Third Rock. Despite
her character's passion for her beau (played by Wayne Knight -- Newman from
Seinfeld), Johnston's character is frequently the source of
lesbian humor, and several episodes have poked fun at her butch demeanor. Sorry,
gals. Johnston's "main squeeze" is Homefront actor David Newsom.
Continuing her comic bent, Johnston appeared in the blockbuster movie
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
as Russian spy Ivana Humpalot, and she plays Wilma in
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, a
prequel
to the first Flintstones movie.
