The place was a small electronics shop on Kings Road in London; the date
was August 19, 1981. That's when Chris Lowe, an architecture student, and Neil
Tenant, a former editor and music journalist, met, immediately discovered a shared enthusiasm for dance music,
and decided
to start a band. Several fitful starts later, after the eventually
successful "West
End Girls," "One More Chance," and "Opportunities," the Pet
Shop Boys topped the charts in 1986 with a new version of "West End
Girls."
The duo's lush, poppy, romantic melodies, along with a healthy sense of
irony, have proved to be a stellar combination. And their ability to
always keep ahead of their contemporaries while maintaining their
earnest yet irreverent identity has endeared them to millions of fans
worldwide.
The Pet Shop Boys have just finished a whirlwind, worldwide tour to promote their latest
album, Nightlife.
And their latest single, "You
Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk," continues to be snapped
up by adoring listeners around the world.
