Two dads, two moms, 10 books

As GLBT parents it's always tough to find good books to read to your children. We've rounded up 10 of our favorite gay kids' books here. Many of these can be hard to find at your local bookstore, so we've included links to Barnes & Noble.com. Enjoy!
"ABC: A Family Alphabet Book" by Desiree Keane & Brian Rappa (illustrators)
This playfully illustrated ABC book depicts kids doing stuff with their parents who happen to be gay. Excellent illustrations! Hard to find, but worth tracking down. (Ages 2 and up)
"Anna Day and the O-Ring," by Elaine Wickens
A simple story about a boy named Evan and his two moms. (Preschool to first grade)
"Daddy's Roommate," by Michael Willhoite
It may seem a bit dated (it originally came out in 1991), but it's still extremely powerful and validating to see a kid and his two dads going about their daily lives. (Preschool to second grade)
" Heather Has Two Mommies," by Leslea Newman and Diana Souza (illustrator) It's the classic of the genre and still as powerful as it was 10 years ago. Heather's favorite number is two. She has two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, two hands and two feet. She also has two mommies, Mama Jane and Mamma Kate. (Ages 3 to 8)

"Lucy Goes to the Country," by Joseph Kennedy and John Canemaker
Lucy is a cat who lives in the city with her two "Big Guys." When they take Lucy to the country, she gets in all kinds of trouble. (Ages 3 and up)
"Olivia Saves the Circus" by Ian Falconer
This isn't really a gay book, but it has such an incredibly campy sensibility that we couldn't resist. Highly recommended, and even better than the original. (Ages 3 and up)
"One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dad, Blue Dads," by Johnny Valentine and Melody Sarecky (illustrator)
This Dr. Seuss-like story is one of our favorites. A rhymed parable with a message of racial and sexual tolerance. (Preschool to second grade)
"The Story of Ferdinand" by Barbara Lynn Edmonds
This may well be the first gay children's book ever written. Munro Leaf's 1936 story of a flower-loving bull still rings true as a symbolic portrayal of growing up as a sensitive boy. (Infants to preschool)
"Who's in a Family," by Robert Skutch and Laura Nienhaus
This is another nice story about the variety of family structures (single moms, divorced parents, gay dads, etc.), with an excellent reflection of racial diversity as well. (Kindergarten to second grade)
"Zack's Story: Growing Up with Same-Sex Parents," by Keith Elliot Greenberg and Carol Halebian (photographer)
An 11-year-old boy describes life as part of a family made up of himself, his mother and her lesbian partner. (Ages 7 to 9)
